Orange Shirt Day Awareness Assembly
Ahead of the Saint Lambert International High School's annual observation of Orange Shirt Day on September 30th, the SLI community- including parents, students, teachers and support staff- joined together to create awareness at an assembly this morning. Together we explored Canada's legacy towards the Indigenous peoples of this land, reading from survivor testimonies, sharing perspectives and hearing inspiring personal testimonies from Ms. Swaneige Bertrand and Ms. Nahka Bertrand, members of the Dene First Nation in the Northwest Territories, and SLI's Ms Kaytee about the long-lasting effects of Residential Schooling on Indigenous communities across the country and how we can all work together in the spirit of Reconciliation. 2019's honoured guest will be Nakuset, a 60s Scoop Survivor and Executive Director of the Native Women's Shelter of Montreal.
We encourage everyone across the RSB to join with SLI in the spirit of Reconciliation and wear orange in honour of the victims and survivors of Residential Schools on September 30th.
Miigwetch!
*Please note that although the official Orange Shirt Day is on September 30th, due to the availability of our 2019 guest speaker, we will be holding our assembly on October 2nd and wearing orange on October 4th.*
